The Right Treatment for Every Termite Species

Not all termite treatments are the same — and not all termites respond to the same methods. Redwood Empire's licensed technicians begin every treatment with a precise species identification, because treating drywood termites requires a fundamentally different approach than eliminating a subterranean colony.

With over 78 years of North Bay experience, we have treated properties of every type — from Victorian-era homes in Sonoma to modern commercial buildings in Marin. We select the most effective, minimally disruptive treatment method for each situation.

Drywood Termite Treatments

Drywood termites live entirely within the wood they consume. They require no soil contact and are commonly found in attic framing, fascia boards, window frames, and furniture. Their infestations can be localized or widespread throughout a structure.

Localized Wood Treatment

When the infestation is contained to an accessible area, localized treatment is the least disruptive option. We drill small holes into infested wood, inject termiticide directly into the galleries, and seal the access points. Effective for confined infestations in specific structural members.

Borate Wood Treatment

Borate-based treatments penetrate wood fibers, protecting against termites, wood-decay fungi, and other wood-destroying insects. Commonly applied to framing during construction or remediation, borate treatments provide long-lasting residual protection.

Heat Treatment

Structural heat treatment raises the internal temperature of infested wood to levels lethal to all life stages of drywood termites. No chemicals required. Effective for localized areas where chemical application is undesirable.

Structural Fumigation

For widespread drywood termite infestations affecting multiple areas of a structure, tent fumigation provides the most complete elimination. The entire structure is sealed and filled with fumigant, reaching termites in every void, crack, and piece of wood throughout the building. See our Fumigation Services page for full details.

Subterranean Termite Treatments

Subterranean termites build colonies in the soil and travel to wood through mud tubes. They are the most destructive termite species in California and responsible for the majority of structural termite damage. Treatment requires targeting both the colony in the soil and the pathways into the structure.

Soil Barrier Treatment (Liquid Termiticide)

A continuous chemical barrier is applied to the soil around the foundation perimeter and under the structure. Termites crossing this barrier are eliminated, and the chemical is transferred through contact back to the colony. This method creates a long-lasting protective zone around the entire structure.

Termite Bait Systems

Bait stations are installed in the soil around the property. Termites discover the bait, carry it back to the colony, and the slow-acting active ingredient eliminates the colony over time. Bait systems are effective for monitoring and colony elimination with minimal soil disturbance.

Inspection First. Treatment begins with a thorough inspection. We never recommend treatment without first identifying the species, the extent of infestation, and the structural impact. This ensures you receive the right treatment at the right price.

Termite Prevention After Treatment

Treatment eliminates active infestations. Prevention keeps them from returning. After treatment, we provide site-specific recommendations that address the conditions that allowed termites to establish in the first place.

  • Eliminate wood-to-soil contact around foundation
  • Repair leaking pipes, gutters, and drainage issues that create moisture
  • Improve crawl space ventilation to reduce humidity
  • Remove wood debris, firewood, and stumps near the structure
  • Apply borate treatment to exposed framing during renovations
  • Schedule annual termite inspections for ongoing monitoring

Frequently Asked Questions — Termite Treatments

Localized treatment targets specific, accessible areas of infestation — ideal when termites are contained to one section of the structure. Fumigation (tenting) treats the entire structure simultaneously and is used for widespread drywood termite infestations where localized access is insufficient.
Localized treatments are typically completed in a few hours. Soil barrier treatments for subterranean termites may take a full day. Fumigation requires 48–72 hours of property vacancy. Your inspector will provide a specific timeline after evaluating the infestation.
Properly applied treatments are highly effective. We provide post-treatment prevention guidance and can schedule follow-up inspections. Annual inspections are the best way to ensure long-term protection.
Localized treatments typically do not require vacancy. Subterranean soil treatments may require brief access restrictions to treated areas. Fumigation requires all occupants, pets, and plants to vacate for 48–72 hours.
All treatments are applied by licensed technicians following California DPR guidelines. We use targeted application methods and will provide specific re-entry instructions based on the treatment type used.
