Why Treatment Selection Matters

Termite treatment is not one-size-fits-all. The appropriate method depends on the species, infestation extent and location, construction type, occupant sensitivities, and homeowner preference. Selecting the wrong method — or choosing a cheaper option when a more comprehensive approach is warranted — consistently results in repeat treatments that cost more in aggregate.

Option 1 — Localized (Spot) Treatment for Drywood Termites

Localized treatment involves injecting termiticide directly into drywood termite galleries through small drilled holes in infested wood. Best suited for infestations confined to specific, identifiable structural members. No evacuation required, targeted application, lower cost than fumigation, immediate re-entry. Limitation: cannot address galleries in inaccessible locations or infestations distributed throughout the structure.

Option 2 — Structural Fumigation for Drywood Termites

Structural fumigation (tent fumigation) encloses the entire structure in a gas-tight tarp and introduces sulfuryl fluoride gas, which penetrates all wood in the structure — reaching galleries inaccessible to injection. Occupants, pets, and plants must vacate for 24–72 hours. This is the most comprehensive available drywood termite treatment and is appropriate when infestation is found in multiple locations throughout the structure.

Fumigation is the most comprehensive treatment for drywood termites but does not provide residual protection after treatment and cannot address subterranean termites.

Option 3 — Liquid Soil Barrier for Subterranean Termites

Subterranean termite soil treatment involves applying liquid termiticide to the soil around the foundation perimeter and beneath the structure. Modern non-repellent formulations allow termites to pass through the treated zone and carry the active ingredient back to the underground colony. Highly effective for active subterranean infestations; provides 5–10+ years of residual protection with properly applied modern products.

Option 4 — Termite Baiting Systems

Bait stations installed in the soil around the structure contain cellulose bait treated with a slow-acting insect growth regulator. Workers carry bait back to the colony, gradually eliminating it over weeks to months. Best suited when liquid treatment is impractical — adjacent water features, slab with no perimeter access, sensitive landscape areas.

How Redwood Empire Selects the Right Treatment

Our inspectors assess each property individually and recommend the treatment method based on species identification, infestation extent, construction type, and homeowner priorities. We provide a clear written recommendation explaining our reasoning and give homeowners the information they need to make an informed decision.

Frequently Asked Questions

No — localized infestations confined to specific areas can often be addressed with injection treatment, which is less expensive and does not require evacuation. Fumigation is most appropriate for widespread, multi-location infestations or older homes where activity is distributed throughout the structure.
The fumigation process takes approximately 24–72 hours depending on structure size and dosage. Most North Bay homes can be safely re-entered within 3 days.
Localized drywood treatment protects treated galleries but does not prevent new infestations from establishing in untreated areas. Fumigation eliminates all drywood termites present but provides no residual protection. Soil barrier treatments typically provide 5–10+ years of protection with modern termiticides.
For localized injection and soil barrier treatment — yes, in most cases. For structural fumigation — no. All occupants, pets, and plants must vacate for the fumigation period.
If new activity is found in areas not part of the original treatment, or the infestation was more extensive than assessed, additional treatment is required. This is why comprehensive pre-treatment inspection and honest assessment of infestation extent is critical.
